Ethelyn VonHelmers Fitzsimmons of Mantua will celebrate her 110th birthday on May 17 – a milestone that places her among the oldest Ohioans. She’s also someone close to Kent State University. Born during WWI, Fitzsimmons has lived independently in her home since 1955 and remains sharp, witty, and full of memories spanning more than a century, according to a recent article from the Record-Courier. Each year, Kent State University invites an exciting array of visiting artists to speak at the School of Art. In 2025, Kent Blossom Art Intensives welcomes eight visiting artists to participate in course workshops and give free lectures to the community. Georgia Barnhart’s path to higher education did not begin at a high school graduation stage. It started years later, in a quiet moment after her children had grown, the house had calmed, and her desire to make a difference in the world could no longer be quieted.“I decided to study to become a victim advocate,” Barnhart said. “I realized I wasn’t done.
